The Peeredge Orchestrator fully supports in-band DTMF and out-of-band DTMF.
For in-band DTMF to work correctly an uncompressed audio codec (i.e. G.711) must be negotiated in the call setup.
For out-of-band DTMF, the Peeredge Orchestrator fully supports RFC 4733 (and RFC 2833) for passing DTMF signaling in RTP packets. Some customer deployments may require the use of Media Termination Points (MTPs) to terminate the RTP media, extract and forward the DTMF signals to the IP endpoints that do not support RFC 4733 or RFC 2833 (i.e. H.323 gateways). Introducing Media Termination Points (MTPs) into the call will hairpin the media through the MTPs. Depending on the location of the MTPs, relative to the IP endpoint, additional network bandwidth may be consumed.
Recommendations
If the customer SBCs/PBXs support RFC 4733, then 46 Labs recommends out-of-band DTMF using 101 as the out-of-band payload type for DTMF.
